The Olaplex & K18 Myth: Why Good Hair Care Needs Guidance
What Olaplex and K18 can really do, what they cannot, and why good consultation matters more than any product.
By Hauke Schmidt
There are few products as hyped as Olaplex and K18. Both promise repair. Both have their place. But both are often misunderstood.
What These Products Do
Olaplex works at the molecular level. It reconnects disulfide bonds in hair broken by chemical treatment. It works. But it works best on chemically treated hair.
K18 works with peptides. It targets keratin structure and can help reduce mechanical damage. This also works. But contrary to claims, not equally for every hair type.
The Limits
No product can:
- Repair hair that needs to be cut off
- Completely reverse structural damage
- Compensate for the wrong care routine
- Replace missing haircuts
The Real Problem
The marketing of these products suggests that care is simple. Buy this product, and everything will be fine.
But good hair care is individual. It depends on:
- Your hair structure
- Your condition
- Your styling behavior
- Your daily life
Consultation Before Product
At the atelier, we sell products. AVEDA. La Biosthétique. Good brands with real substance.
But more important than selling is consultation. We look at your hair. We understand your problem. And then we recommend what really helps.
That might be a product. But often it is also: wash differently. Blow-dry less. Or simply the right cut.
What You Should Take Away
Olaplex and K18 are not bad. But they are also not the solution to everything. If you want to know what your hair really needs, you do not need advertising. You need consultation.
